How to Sweep a Room for Electronic Listening Devices

Learning how to sweep a room for electronic listening devices is not as complicated as you may think and once you learn the basic steps you will be able to sweep a normal sized room in just a few minutes. Much of the time will depend on the bug detector you are using as your sweeping device.

The process to properly sweep a room is the same whether your audio bug detector has some type of strength meter or uses audio alarms to alert you to any radio frequencies it may detect.

You can decide whether you start on the left or right of the entrance door since what you are basically going to do is treat the room like a grid and go row by row until the room is completely and thoroughly swept.

Start your sweep by facing the wall and stand back about 5 feet from it. Hold your bug detector in your outstretched arm and start to slowly move your arm back and forth from side to side. Depending on your detector you will either hear a sound or see the strength meter move if you pick up any signals during the sweep.

If your bug detector should find a signal you will need to determine which way the signal is coming from by using a process of elimination. The stronger the signal the more your detector will react so you can narrow it down by continuing to go side to side until you see which way the signal is the strongest.

Once you narrow down the direction move a few steps in that direction and sweep side to side once again to determine which way the signal is the strongest. Repeat these steps until the signal is equally as strong on both sides of you.

Once you are in front of the source you can use slow side to side movements to narrow it down to the exact point of the signal. Depending on where the bug is located, you may need to move your arm up and down as well in order to find the exact point of the signal.

If you find you are unable to narrow down the exact source of the radio frequencies if may be due to those signals bleeding in through the walls from outside of the room. Although a wall can block much of a radio signal some of it will generally still get through.

You can verify this if the signal is the strongest when you are in front of the window. If there is no window you may need to go outside and walk around the building if at all possible.

It sounds a lot harder than it is but after you have done it a couple of times you will be able to sweep an entire room in just minutes and be sure no one will be able to listen in to the conversation within the room.

There are two different types of directional antennas: directional and highly directional.

6. Smaller Profile - Omnidirectional antennas are hard to blend into an office enviroment or building. They stick out like a sore thumb and advertise your wireless network to everyone. Directional antennas like the panel type have a smaller profile and often look like lights or smoke detectors.

This articles purpose isn't saying that there isn't a purpose for omnidirectional antennas. What I"m saying is that most people don't even think of changing their antennas after purchasing their wireless router or access point. Most IP camera recording software supports a wide range of IP camera models and manufacturers. This allows you to mix and match IP cameras in your installation to create a custom surveillance solution that fits perfectly for you.

Let's say you wanted to setup three IP surveillance cameras, one viewing a parking lot, one watching your front lobby and another monitoring the rear entrance of your building. You could put three different IP camera models - even manufacturers - in this installation. You could go with an IQEye 755 5.0 MegaPixel IP Camera in the parking lot to monitor vehicles and provide a high quality image to zoom in on license plates. You could put a Wireless AXIS 207W with audio in the front lobby to minimize cabling requirements and to provide audio surveillance. This would allow you to connect the IP camera to your DVR recording station and still have a network connection attached allowing for remote viewing and recording to a PC or offsite location. Be sure to verify the IP camera has the ability to send video to both the BNC/Analog output and through the network simultaneously.

PoE Power over Ethernet

Power over Ethernet (PoE) is the ability to power your IP camera and provide network activity via one RJ45 network cable. This provides an easier installation and lower cable installation costs as this eliminates the need for a power cable to be connected to the camera. To take advantage of this technology, make sure your IP camera is PoE compliant. A PoE network router/hub or Midspan will be required to provide power to the camera via the RJ45 network cable. PoE kits are also available which provide power via network cable when you do not have a Midspan or router/hub. One PoE kit will be required per camera and will need to output the correct power requirements (5V, 9V, 12V, etc.).

The IP camera can be set to receive an input from these devices which can then tell the camera to record video when a specific event is triggered. Storage and Management of information: If you have a LANor WAM, you can store and run the analysis of the information on your own network. In this case, at least one of the computers of the network will be dedicated to this endeavor, and the reception hardware will be attached to it. If, on the other hand, people from different geographical locations need access to the information, then you might opt for a hosted solution. Hosted solutions allow for 24-7 access via internet, so it becomes location independent.

Budget: There are hardware choices in different price ranges. As rule of the thumb, the smaller the up-front cost the bigger the long term cost. The total cost of the project will be given by the hardware itself, installation, life of the equipment and maintenance costs.
